Upholding of Moygashel polling decision is the right decision - Gildernew

13 April, 2015 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin Westminster candidate for Fermanagh South Tyrone Michelle Gildernew has welcomed the final decision to close a polling station in Moygashel.

Speaking today Ms Gildernew said:

“The original decision to close the polling station in Moygashel was the right one. This has been reiterated today following a review.

“It is clear that the presence of a large number of loyalist flag protestors outside the polling station deterred many from exercising their democratic right.

“It intimidated many, from across all sections of our community, from using the polling station.

“It could not in any sense be deemed proper and correct to allow this to happen again during an election. Voting should be free from any type of harassment and especially the sectarian harassment and threats that occurred on that day.

““While I understand that some people may have to travel slightly further other will have less travelling to do it is undoubtedly the a better option than to allow this level of intimidation to happen again.”
