Colreavy calls on government to protect post office network
Michael Colreavy TD, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, has called on the government to take seriously the value of the post office network in Ireland.
Deputy Colreavy said:
“It is vital that the post office network is viewed as a national asset, with branches in almost every community across the state. This is a level of infrastructure which needs to be protected.
“Government services such as motor tax should be directed towards the post office network. This would make the services of government become more accessible to communities while also help ensuring the survival of the post office network.
“It is also essential that the government ensures that social protection payments are continued to be paid through the post office network. Social protection payments currently amount to approximately 30% of the business of post offices.
“The post office network plays an important role in many communities across Ireland. It is the focal point for many business and social activities in the community, especially among the elderly population.
“The loss of the post office network would have a disastrous effect on the social makeup of many areas.
“All of this was outlined previously in a report produced by the Transport and Communications Committee. However, there has been very little action to tackle these issues.”
