Lynn Boylan MEP meets Frederica Mogherini's office over Ibrahim Halawa case
Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has today met with a representative who deals with human rights issues from Frederica Mogherini's office, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, to discuss Ibrahim Halawa’s ongoing detention in Egypt.
Speaking today from Brussels Ms Boylan said:
“We met with Ms. Mogherini’s office to share our very grave concerns for Ibrahim’s safety.
We raised the point that Egypt is in fact in breach of Article 2 of the EuroMed Agreement which states,
"Respect for the democratic principles and fundamental human rights established by the Universal declaration of human Rights, which guides their internal and international policy and constitutes an essential element of this agreement."
Ibrahim is the only EU citizen currently still detained after the protests that took place in Cairo on 16 and 17 August 2013. He was just 17 at the time and has now been imprisoned for over 600 days.
As the Irish government continues with its uninspired approach to Ibrahim’s dire situation, we will continue to engage in dialogue with Frederica Mogherini's office. “
