Shocking waiting list figures at Waterford Regional Hospital - Cullinane

15 April, 2015 - by David Cullinane TD

Waterford Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane has said figures released to his party showing nearly 25,000 patients waiting on procedures at Waterford Regional Hospital are shocking.

Senator Cullinane was speaking today after he was provided with details of the number patients waiting for procedures at the hospital, broken down by speciality and by how long they have been waiting.

He said he will be raising the issue in the Seanad this week and calling for a debate with Minister Leo Varadkar.

Senator Cullinane said;

“These figures are truly shocking.  In Orthopaedics alone there are 2,375 patients waiting more than a year for procedures with 5,880 waiting in that department altogether.

“There are 8,478 patients waiting longer than the government commitment of a maximum waiting time of 12 months.

“In total there are 24,274 patients waiting for procedures at Waterford Regional Hospital alone.  That is just under 25,000 families affected by this crisis.

“This is a damning indictment of this and previous governments and I will be raising the issue in the Seanad this week where I will be asking for Minister Leo Varadkar to come in and address these figures.

“Ultimately we need to know how the government intends to deal with this crisis and have these patients’ procedures progresses through the system.”
