Minister must roll out Rural Development Plan Immediately- Carthy

20 April, 2015 - by Matt Carthy MEP

Commenting today on the Letter of Comfort received by the Irish Government from the European Commission on Ireland’s Rural Development Plan, Sinn Fein MEP for the Midlands North West and member of the European Agricultural and Rural Development Committee, Matt Carthy, has stated that the Minister for Agriculture must now ensure that the Rural Development Programme is rolled out without any further delay.

Carthy said:

“I welcome today’s confirmation that a letter of comfort has been received from the European Commission.

“Farmers and rural community organisations have been waiting anxiously for a too long for a signal that the Rural Development Programme could commence.

“The Minister for Agriculture has already made a clear commitment that the schemes under the Rural Development Plan would commence once a letter of comfort was received from Europe.

“I am now calling on the Minister to make good on his promise and ensure that all schemes are opened without further delay.

“I am also calling on the Minister to identify, what, if any, outstanding issues remain to be resolved in respect of Ireland’s Rural Development Programme and the timeframe for the completion of same.”ENDS
