Hazzard backs call for clarity over submarine incident
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has backed a call by Fisheries Minister Minister for the British government to clarify whether it was involved in an incident where a trawler was snagged by a submarine.
Speaking after meeting the crew of the 'Karen' at Ardglass harbour alongside Minister O'Neill, Mr Hazzard said;
"I met Paul Murphy, skipper of the 'Karen,' with my party colleague, Fisheries Minister Michelle O'Neill at Ardglass Harbour today to express our concern at what happened last week.
"Paul and his crew are lucky to be alive after their nets became snagged on a submarine 18 miles off the Down coast.
"This crew and the rest of the fishing feet are entitled to answers about exactly what happened and, more importantly who was responsible.
"I welcome the fact Minister O'Neill has raised this matter with the British Ministry of Defence and has written to British Secretary of State Elizabeth Truss to register her concern.
"Martin McGuinness has also raised this worrying incident with Theresa Villiers to ascertain if British submarines were involved.
"The safety of our fishing fleet is paramount and we need answers on exactly what happened last week."
