Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has welcomed an invitation to discuss Equality Issues at NUIG with President James Browne

He says;

“I welcome the invitation that has now been extended to us as elected representatives to meet the President of NUIG, Dr James Browne, as we have been seeking an engagement to raise concerns in relation to equality at the college for some time.

“Matt Carthy MEP, Councillor Anna Marley and myself had made numerous attempts to meet with the NUIG President, Jim Browne and the ruling authority to discuss the legitimate issues raised with us by union representatives in relation to Equality issues in the college and he has now agreed to meet us, which we welcome. We will be meeting him at NUIG on Friday.

“The Unions, worker and student representatives have outlined their concerns to us that the review being undertaken needed to be an independent, external one. That is not the case. Then it was outlined that the makeup of the Task Force should be agreed with union and worker representatives in advance and that was dismissed.

“We in Sinn Féin have serious concerns that the findings of the Task Force will be undermined for their lack of independence and that the process is flawed before it begins.

“It is clear to me from statements made by representatives of the Higher Education Authority in an Oireachtas subcommittee that the Equality issues of concern in NUIG are common across the Higher Education sector. I believe that we will hear of more equality issues in relation to NUIG in the near future and that these will all need to be addressed in a comprehensive and transparent manner. I believe that should be done sooner rather than later.

“We have also raised the issue with the Chair of Údarás na hOllscoile and the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.”

Uachtarán OÉG chun bualadh le toscaireacht ó Shinn Féin ar cheisteanna cothromaíochta – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá fáilte curtha ag Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh roimh an gcuireadh atá faighte anois chun ceisteanna cothromaíochta in OÉG a phlé leis an Uachtarán, an Dr. James Browne.

Deir sé,

'Fáiltím roimh an gcuireadh atá tugtha dúinn anois mar ionadaithe tofa chun bualadh le Uachtarán na hOllscoile, mar bhí muid ag lorg a leithéid de chruinniú le tamall anuas leis an imní atá ann faoi ceisteanna cothromaíochta san gcoláiste a chur in iúil.

‘Bhí roinnt iarrachtaí déanta ag an bhFeisire Matt Carthy MEP, an Comhairleoir Anna Marley agus agam féin chun bualadh le James Browne agus Údarás na hOllscoile leis na ceisteanna dáiríre atá ardaithe linn ag ionadaithe na gceardchumainn maidir le cúrsaí cothromaíochta san ollscoil a phlé agus tá sé anois toiliú bualadh linn agus beidh an cruinniú sin ar siúl in OÉG ar an Aoine beag seo.

‘Tá cur síos cuimsitheach déanta linn ag na ceardchumainn, ionadaithe na n-oibrithe agus na mic léinn leis an mbuairt atá orthu go bhfuil gá le scrúdú, neamhspleách, seachtrach. Ní shin mar atá. Ansin, cuireadh in iúl gur chóir comhdhéanamh an Tasc Fhórsa a bheith aontaithe leis na ceardchumainn agus ionadaithe na n-oibrithe roimh ré agus rinneadh beag is fiú don mholadh sin.

‘Tá imní dáiríre orainne i Sinn Féin nach mbeidh glacadh le torthaí an Tasc Fhórsa mar gheall ar an easpa neamhspleáchais agus go meastar go bhfuil an córas athbhreithnithe fabhtach ó thús.

‘Tá sé soiléir domsa ó ráitis a rinne an Údarás um Ardoideachais ag comhchoiste Oireachtais chomh maith go bhfuil na ceisteanna atá ardaithe i gcomhthéacs OÉG ina ábhar imní trasna na h-earnála ar fad agus measaim go dtiocfaidh ceisteanna breise chun cinn maidir le OÉG go luath agus gur gá déileáil leo seo ar bhealach cuimsitheach agus trédhearcach. Sílim gur fearr seo a dhéanamh luath seachas mall.

‘Tá na ceisteanna seo ardaithe le Cathaoirleach Údarás na hOllscoile agus Coimisiún na hÉireann um Chearta an Duine agus Comhionannas agam freisin.'
