Sinn Féin launches local marriage equality campaign- Eoin Ó Broin
Dublin Mid-West Sinn Féin launched its Marriage Equality referendum campaign this week with an election style canvas, leaflet and poster operation. The party will be canvassing five time a week across the constituency and delivering tens of thousands of leaflets and erecting hundreds of posters.
Speaking after the first weekend of canvassing in Clondalkin and Lucan Councillor Eoin Ó Broin said that Sinn Féin, ‘would be working for the maximum possible Yes vote on May 22nd.’
Cllr Ó Broin said:
‘On May 22nd people will have an opportunity to vote for equality. Giving lesbian and gay couples the right to civil marriage would send a strong signal that we value all citizens equally.
‘There is simply no reason why the state should not give equal recognition to loving lesbian and gay couples who want to make a lifetime commitment to each other.
‘Nothing in this referendum affects existing adoption legislation or the rights and entitlements of children.
‘If anything marriage equality gives the children of same sex couples the same rights as their peers.
‘In order to deliver the maximum possible Yes vote in Dublin Mid-West Sinn Féin will be running a general election style campaign over the coming weeks. We will have five canvasses a week and will be putting up hundreds of posters and distributing tens of thousands of leaflets.
‘It is clear from the canvassing that we have don’t so far that the majority of people support a Yes vote. However there is no room for complacency. We need to make sure that every Yes voter gets out on the day and casts their vote for equality and a better Ireland for all.
‘Sinn Féin also welcomes the establishment of the non-party Yes Equality Dublin Mid-West campaign group. Anyone not affiliated with a political party who wants to get involved in this referendum camping should contact the Yes Equality group via Facebook and get involved.
