Quads and Scramblers destroying our green spaces- Cllr Sarah Holland
Sinn Féin Cllr Sarah Holland has called for a multi-agency approach to the ongoing problem of joy riding on quads and scramblers.
“These vehicles are destroying our Green spaces. Quads and scramblers are gaining access to parks and pitches, and making them unsafe for community use.
The issue has been raised with Gardaí, who have cited the very real concern that some of these young drivers are hoping for a chase from Garda. This results in high speed and dangerous driving through residential areas, which could result in a death.
Pitches and parks are being torn up. We need to get our thinking caps on – green areas and pitches can be cut off to vehicular access with fencing and shrubbery and Gardaí need to be able to safely stop these drivers when their behaviour becomes dangerous.
Gardaí did used to have their own scrambler, which was invaluable I helping them to catch anyone breaking the law, but it was banjaxed through overuse, and they were never given the funds to replace it.
Local motocross clubs are still trying to identify a site for a track – this would give these young drivers somewhere to go and a safe and regulated environment in which to practice their sport.
Motocross could provide a valuable outlet for young people who want to engage in an alternative sport, and local clubs should be supported.
Scramblers are a problem all over South Dublin, and need to be tackled head on”
