O’Brien asks Minister to confirm whether DEIS schools will lose resources
Speaking in the Dáil today, Sinn Féin TD and Education Spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien questioned Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan on the upcoming review of DEIS, and asked whether schools will lose resources as a result.
Deputy O’Brien said:
“The recent ESRI report on the operation of DEIS demonstrated that the programme has been excellent in delivering supports to schools in deprived and disadvantaged areas.
“We are, of course, conscious that it is good practice to review programmes that are in place, but I am concerned that a forthcoming review may be used as cover to cut resources to schools that have used the DEIS programme very effectively.
“The areas that these schools are in have not suddenly been put on an equal playing field with other non-disadvantaged areas – rates of unemployment and poverty are still incredibly high.
“Time and again, we have witnessed this government change the application of a rule, so that instead of making a straight cut to resources, they just make them more difficult to access.
“I am asking the Minister to clarify whether schools which have used their resources effectively are going to keep those resources in the period following any review that takes place.”
