Call for improvements in disabled facilities

24 November, 2004

Glens Sinn Fein Councillor, Oliver McMullan, has called for better all-year round facilities for disabled members of the community within Moyle.

Cllr McMullan said:

"The provision of facilities for people with special needs within Moyle is disgracefully poor. We have called for a meeting with local disability and sports groups to be arranged to address this issue.

"There is no reason why Sports Programmes couldn't be organised through Youth Clubs and Summer Schemes for young people with special needs in this area. People shouldn't have to travel to Ballymoney or Coleraine to avail of this and they shouldn't be expected to. I have already suggested that people who are training for qualifications in dealing with people with special needs should be given the opportunity to work in this field in the Glens or Ballycastle.

"Young people with special needs have no outlets for any activity here at all during the winter and this is one issue we hope to adequately address in the coming weeks and months." ENDS
