McShane welcomes Australian court verdict

24 April, 2015 - by Cara McShane

Sinn Féin Councillor Cara McShane has welcomed the court verdict in Australia this morning for Ballycastle man Barry Lyttle.

Cllr McShane has been liaising with the family since the New Year incident.

The Ballycastle and Glens councillor said:

"The past 16 weeks have been a living nightmare for the Lyttle family.  Barry and Patrick are very close brothers, and the incident that happened in early January is something that could have happened between siblings in many families.

"Of course the focus for everyone in the aftermath of the incident was Patrick's survival.  Thankfully Patrick is on the road to recovery and since being released from hospital, has been at his brother's side every step of the way during the legal proceedings.

"Barry has always shown deep remorse for what happened and the strong relationship with his brother was never in doubt throughout the past four months.  I am delighted that common sense has prevailed this morning.

"It brings another chapter of this ordeal to a close.  Their father, who had been out on holiday in Australia vowed to only come home with both brothers.  Now they can start making preparations for that journey and finally be re-united back home in Ireland with the rest of their family."
