Landlords the only winners from Minister Kelly’s housing targets

24 April, 2015 - by Eoin O'Broin

Sinn Féin Councillor Eoin Ó Broin has said that ‘Landlords are the real winners from Minister Alan Kelly’s housing targets’.

The targets were issued by the Department of Environment to South Dublin County Council last Friday. They reveal that of the 3180 housing units to be funded by the Department of Environment in South Dublin over the next three years more than 90% will be subsidised private rented accommodation. Only 350 of these units will be Council houses.

Commenting on the figures Sinn Féin Councillor Eoin Ó Broin said:

‘The social housing targets issued by Minister Alan Kelly’s Department will come as a real shock to hundreds of thousands of families who have spent years on Council lists across the state.

‘Minister Kelly will provide funding to South Dublin County Council over the next three years to house 3180 families from our housing list.

‘However more than 90% of these units will be subsidised private rented accommodation. Only 350 of these units will be Council houses.

‘2830 families are to be housed in various Government subsidised private rented schemes.

‘1735 families, more than half of the total, will be trapped in year to year private sector leases in the Housing Assistance Payment. They will have no long term security of tenure and will be unable to put down real roots in the community.

‘Another 1,095 families will be in leases of between 4 and 10 years in the Rental Accommodation Scheme and Long Term Leasing Initiative. Families will still be living in private rented accommodation and ultimately with the same uncertainty.

‘The only winners from Minister Kelly’s targets are private landlords who will benefit handsomely from these subsidies.

‘This is not social housing. It is the privatisation of social housing by stealth. It will not meet the long term housing needs of the families who are effectively being left in the private rental sector for the remainder of their lives. It will not lead to sustainable and settled communities.’
