O’Brien supports drug injection sites proposal
Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central, Jonathan O’Brien has today welcomed comments from drugs Minister Aodhán O Ríordáin concerning supervised injection centres for drug users.
Deputy O’Brien said:
“I welcome any moves towards introducing supervised injection sites for drug users.
“This would be a welcome public health initiative as current health and drugs policy has not stopped people injecting or taking drugs so we need to make sure that they do this in a safe and supervised environment where they can access the medical and social care they need.
“Supervised injection sites were recommended as far back as 2005 by the Drugs Advisory Body, and again in 2010 by the European Drugs Agency, and it is essential we look to best practice in this area.
“We accept that some people will be reluctant to support this but I would ask them to understand that addiction is an issue that affects everyone and currently vulnerable people are injecting in side streets and laneways in our city centres.
“It is not good enough to simply allow people to overdose down laneways, and we have a responsibility to try and address the needs of those affected by addiction.
“I would urge Minister O Ríordáin to move on this matter as quickly as possible.”
