Liadh Ní Riada MEP congratulates WIT President on appointment
Liadh Ní Riada today congratulated Professor Willie Donnelly on his appointment as President of Waterford Institute of Technology. The Sinn Féin MEP met with Professor Donnelly at WIT today alongside Senator David Cullinane and Councillor Declan Clune.
The Sinn Féin delegation discussed the bid for a university in the South-East and European funding for research and innovation at the institute.
Liadh Ní Riada said:
“WIT is an important part of the social and educational fabric of Waterford and the South East. I am on the record as stating that the region needs and deserves a university. WIT is internationally renowned in the field of research and has an inbuilt culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
“Recently I engaged with the Research Support Unit of WIT on its EU funded Green Innovation Future Technologies project as part of a consultation for a report on Green Growth and SMEs that I authored in the European Parliament.
“I know the value of EU support for research, for innovation in the knowledge economy, in engineering, for green growth and indeed for blue growth. WIT already collaborates with the Dunmore East Fisheries Local Action Group, which is funded by the EU to promote economic development in our maritime sector and to reinvigorate coastal communities. I am keep to use my influence to support and expand this work.
“I wish Willie and WIT the very best, and look forwarding to working with both in the future.”
