“Climbing waiting list figures in the Mater Hospital worrying”- Cllr Janice Boylan

12 May, 2015 - by Janice Boylan

Dublin Sinn Féin city councillor Janice Boylan is appalled at the rising number of citizens languishing on hospital waiting lists.

Commenting today Cllr Boylan said:

“At the end of last week there were 367 citizens on trolleys in Emergency Departments across the state. The Mater Hospital had 23 patients waiting, more double the amount of the previous week.

There is also a serious problem with waiting lists for outpatients and inpatient procedures in the Mater.

Figures available from the National Treatment Purchase Fund reveal that at the end of April there were 23197 outpatients attending the Mater Hospital, up 576 on the previous month.

Of these 8861 had been waiting up to three months; 5274 had been waiting for 3-6 months; 6001 waiting 6-12 months, 2447 have been waiting between one and two years and 37 people have been waiting between two and three years.

Inpatient figures were also poor.  At the end of April, in the Mater 5768 patients were waiting for an inpatient procedure. 1035 of these have been waiting for more than a year.

The government’s health strategy is failing patients. The health system would benefit hugely from more investment in bed capacity and in frontline staff.”
