Lynn Boylan MEP to discuss resistance to privatisation at international water summit
Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan will attend an International water movement meeting in Thessaloniki this weekend, a region that has successfully resisted privatisation. Ms Boylan is attending in her capacity as lead author on the Right2Water report for the European Parliament.
Speaking ahead of her visit the Sinn Féin MEP said:
“Thessaloniki is to the fore of the struggle against the privatisation of water services. When the privatisation of water services was forced upon the region by the Troika there was broad resistance and a subsequent campaign successfully organised a popular referendum against water privatisation, which was emphatically passed.
“It has been a year since the referendum and this conference will focus on water as common good and how to properly manage this resource.
“Attendees will look at the Greek and international situation of water movements and discuss what are the next steps that can be taken.
“I look forward to hearing and sharing international experiences of water movements.
“The threat of privatisation will be the next challenge facing Right2Water supporters.
“Thessaloniki is an example of a region that successfully resisted privatisation and there is a lot to learn from them.”
