Sinn Féin's absence on RTÉ marriage equality debates 'outrageous' – Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD
The Political Director of Sinn Féin's Marriage Equality campaign, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD, has expressed his serious concern at the absence of Sinn Féin spokespersons from all of the debates on RTÉ radio and television programmes, regarding the upcoming Marriage Equality Referendum.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said;
“For over 30 years Sinn Féin have been strident proponents for equal rights & opportunities for the LGBT community. We have tabled and supported motions in support of marriage equality in council chambers throughout Ireland, as well as in the Assembly & the Oireachtas.
“We are proud of our progressive role on LGBT issues and our record for promoting LGBT rights".
"It is outrageous that RTÉ have not seen fit to have a Sinn Féin representative on any of the numerous Marriage Equality Referendum debates on radio and TV.
“No political party has worked harder than Sinn Féin in the last while, canvassing and leafleting houses around the state. This has disrespected the efforts of so many Sinn Féin members who have been actively campaigning for marriage equality.
“RTÉ seem to have forgotten that this is not a government driven referendum. It was proposed by the Constitutional Convention.
“We will be making a complaint to RTÉ in the strongest possible terms and we will be seeking a meeting with them to resolve this exclusion".
