Ruane welcomes decision in discrimination case

19 May, 2015 - by Caitríona Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has welcomed news that a Belfast court has found in favour of a customer who was discriminated against by Asher's Bakers Company on the grounds of sexual orientation and political beliefs.

Ms Ruane said;

"I welcome today's decision that Asher's Baking Company did discriminate against a gay customer when it refused to make a cake featuring a slogan supporting equal marriage.

"This is a clear judgement from the court that the company discriminated against gay activist Gareth Lee on the grounds of sexual orientation and political beliefs.

"This is the right decision and confirms our view that everyone should be treated fairly and with equality.

"It is a good day for equality and a good day for everyone in our society.

"Now as we move forward from this judgement we must ensure that equality is extended to everyone, and that includes marriage equality for all.

"There is an opportunity to do that on Friday in the 26 Counties.

"I would encourage everyone who can to vote yes for marriage equality and we will continue to campaign for equal marriage in the North."
