Lynn Boylan MEP welcomes positive vote supporting the fight against antimicrobial resistance
Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has welcomed a vote today in favour of a resolution supporting the fight against antimicrobial resistance in public health and food safety.
The Dublin representative said:
“This resolution while non-binding in nature is a positive step forward and serves as an important reminder that resistance to antibiotics is already causing 25,000 deaths in Europe alone.
“If immediate action is not taken we will find ourselves sleep-walking into a scenario where routine infections could be deadly and life-saving therapies such as chemotherapy will become impossible to use.
“There must be a holistic approach to tackling this issue including addressing the overuse of antibiotics in human health and animal health.
“An area in need of improvement are our food production methods.
We need to encourage a more prudent use of antibiotics in livestock by improving animal health through disease prevention, good management and better diagnostics when an animal gets sick. Steps like these could play a significant role in reducing resistance.
I would call on the Irish government to be more proactive on this issue and not to wait for EU legislation which might be some time coming.”
