My decisions as a TD for Carlow Kilkenny will be guided by my experiences as a woman and mother - Cllr Kathleen Funchion
Sinn Féin by-election candidate Cllr Kathleen Funchion has urged female voters to back her campaign to deliver effective representation for the constituency of Carlow Kilkenny.
Cllr. Kathleen Funchion said:
“Women are increasingly becoming politicised and active in public life. In particular, we have seen how effective Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald TD and Sandra McLellan TD are in contributing to Dáil debates. This effectiveness is something which lacks in the constituency of Carlow Kilkenny.
“In recent years, we have seen Government policies that neglect and sideline women. The right of a woman to maternity protection and affordable quality child-care still remains an issue to be resolved. The failure of the Government to inject increased investment into the childcare system is disappointing. Ireland currently invests just 0.2% GDP in childcare. The average OECD investment is 0.7% GDP. The lack of quality employment also affects women with 60% of low paid workers being female. Here again, we see the government turn a blind eye to yet another issue affecting women and their families.
“My experiences as a mother of two young children will guide my decision making within the Dáil if elected. I will not stand idly by and watch the Government wreck havoc by implementing disastrous policies impacting our children’s lives and future. I will fight tirelessly for a better future for our children.”
