Stop discriminating against tillage farmers - Cllr Kathleen Funchion

20 May, 2015 - by Kathleen Funchion TD

Sinn Féin Carlow Kilkenny by-election candidate Cllr Kathleen Funchion has called on the Minister for Agriculture to stop discriminating against tillage farmers and to give them the benefit of the same supports as farmers in other sectors.

Cllr Funchion said:

“Under the Young Farmers’ Scheme all sectors are eligible for 60% aid, except tillage in a way that amounts to discrimination against the sector.

“I am calling on the minister and the government to examine the sector which is already disadvantaged in various ways.

“It works under the pressure of the three-crop over 50 acres rule and cereals are now at the same price in Euro that they were in pounds 30 years ago.

“Tillage farmers need grant aid for capital projects the same as farmers in all other sectors, who benefit from the Young Farmers’ Scheme. The exclusion of tillage farmers amounts to discrimination and I call on the minister to examine this area again.

"I'm calling the minister to examine this area as he committed himself to do at a recent Agriculture, Marine and Food committee meeting."
