MEPs call for Ibrahim Halawa’s immediate release- Lynn Boylan
Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan has delivered a letter, signed by forty two fellow MEPs, to the office of Frederica Mogherini calling for Ibrahim Halawa’s immediate release.
Speaking today the Sinn Féin representative said:
“We addressed this letter to Frederica Mogherini, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice President of the Commission, to highlight the increasingly urgent case of Ibrahim Halawa who, has been imprisoned without trial in an Egyptian jail since August 2013.
“His case was postponed for the 6th time at the end of April when he was also refused bail. His trial has now been scheduled for the 6th of June and his situation is very grave given the verdicts handed down last week.
“Ibrahim’s friends and family are increasingly concerned for his physical and mental wellbeing. He is currently the only EU citizen in Egyptian jail for exercising the essential EU protected freedoms of expression and assembly.
“The Irish government has not gotten very far in securing Ibrahim’s release. It is now time for the government to raise the case of Ibrahim Halawa at Council level.”
