Don’t let apathy defeat equality – McDonald

21 May, 2015 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has commended the far-reaching impact of the Marriage Equality Referendum campaign on Irish society, but has urged voters not to let apathy defeat equality and to vote ‘YES’ tomorrow.

Deputy McDonald said:

“We are so proud in Sinn Féin to have been campaigning alongside all those involved in the Yes Equality campaign. Now we need to get the right result.  I’m confident that we can, but it’s not over yet.

“This referendum is about the right to marry for those who have been denied that right. However it is also more far reaching than that. It is about an absolute recognition of people’s equality. It is about respect for people’s identity and choices. It is a declaration that we wish our citizens to be free, equal and happy.

“The campaign has impacted every corner of Ireland. We have listened to many moving accounts of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters in their struggle for equality. These issues are no longer in the dark, and have touched every one of us.

“Now is our chance to ensure fairness, dignity and constitutional equality for all. But we can’t take victory for granted. Every vote counts and I am urging people to come out tomorrow and vote YES.  Don’t let apathy defeat the passing of this referendum. Marriage equality is within our grasp.”
