Rising employment and falling unemployment welcome, but little thanks to this government -Tóibín
Sinn Féin Job Spokesperson Peadar Tóibín TD has said that rising employment and falling unemployment are welcome, but are little thanks to this government.
Deputy Tóibín said:
“We welcome the increase in employment and the fall in unemployment but we are still far from a full recovery or a fair one.
“The unemployment rate of 9.9% is little to boast about as unemployment initially rose under FG/Labour’s version of austerity. We are not even half way back to the unemployment rate before the recession.
“The youth unemployment rate of 21.5% remains shockingly high and the improvement in jobs is largely passing women by. Only a third of the new jobs created in the last year are taken by women.
“We are still losing civil servants, health professionals and Gardaí, with 5,000 more jobs gone since the beginning of 2013. This is distressing for them and their families but also “hampers the efficiency of public services, health and public safety for all.
“The recovery in jobs remains concentrated in the Southern & Eastern regions and in Dublin, where the combined rise in employment was 48,000 in the latest year. Employment in the West fell again and many other areas are seeing very little jobs recovery.
This is far from a full recovery in jobs, and very far from being a fair one.”
