22 May, 2015 - by Gerry Adams TD

In a close of poll statement this evening, Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has commended all those who voted in the Marriage Equality Referendum today and all those who campaigned over the past number of weeks.

Gerry Adams said:

"This was a positive and important referendum campaign. It was marked by compassion, idealism and active citizenship.

"It has brought the issues of inclusion and equality to the fore of public discourse in a very positive way.

"Whatever the final outcome, the issue if equality for Gay and Lesbian citizens is a live political issue.

"I want to commend all those who took part in the campaign over recent weeks and all those who voted, especially those who voted 'Yes'.

“According to one exit poll in the Louth constituency, there has been a very strong 'Yes' vote. Of course this cannot be independently verified but I certainly hope that it is accurate and that this will be reflected across the State.”
