DCC housing proposals light on long term solutions- Cllr Doolan
Dublin Sinn Féin city councillor Daithí Doolan has commented on the DCC campaign to encourage landlords to lease more property to local authorities.
Cllr Doolan said:
“While any initiative that seeks to increase access to housing is welcome. I would give a very wary response to this subdued solution to a growing housing crisis across this city.
“Sinn Féin has stated time and time again that the only real solution to the housing crisis is simply to build more houses.
“This campaign offers an interim solution and should be viewed as a very small part of developing an overall solution.
“It also symbolises a return to the failed policies of the past with an over reliance on private landlords. It is borne out of desperation because the government will not release funding to Dublin City Council to build houses.
“The scheme will in reality open up very little if any additional accommodation and introducing a programme like this without putting forward any measures on rent certainty means the scheme is doomed to failure.
“Furthermore while I recognise the scheme is open to leases of up to twenty years, this doesn’t offer security of tenure for tenants.
“This government needs to wake up and realise that the only viable solution to the housing problem in the city is to build more homes for people.”
