Ó Donnghaile condemns Short Strand pipe bomb attacks

26 May, 2015 - by Mairead O’Donnell

Sinn Féin Councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile has strongly condemned pipe bomb attacks on pensioners' homes at Strand Walk in the Short Strand.

Speaking after a pipe bomb was thrown into the area last night and a further security alert today, Councillor Ó Donnghaile said;

"Last night, homes at Strand Walk were attacked when a device, which the PSNI have described as viable, was thrown.

"Elderly and infirm residents, who have time and time again borne the brunt of attacks on their homes, have been badly shaken at this attack and some have had to leave their homes.

"A further security alert following the discovery of a second pipe bomb in the area has only added to the distress of local residents.

"I have been disturbed by some reports on social media about attacks by ‘republicans’. No such attacks have taken place.

"This is a deliberate attempt to stoke up tensions and people should not to allow themselves to be drawn into a negative agenda which a minority in East Belfast appear intent on pursuing.

"We must stand collectively against any and all incidents along the interface regardless of their origin. We must not just condemn sectarianism but actively challenge and face it down.

"I call on the PSNI to do all they can to bring those responsible for these attacks to account and call on anyone who has knowledge of these to bring it to the relevant authorities."
