Sinn Féin will “Stand Up for the West” – Senator Ó Clochartaigh

27 May, 2015

Speaking in advance of the launch of the party’s “Stand Up For The West” campaign on Thursday 28th May in the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar, Sinn Féin General Election candidate for Galway West-South Mayo, Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called for community groups and individuals to get behind the campaign and demand a new deal for the West of Ireland.

The launch will be addressed by Gerry Adams TD and President of Sinn Féin, Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West Matt Carthy and spokesperson for the campaign, Cllr Rose Conway Walsh from Mayo.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“For many in the western counties of Galway, Sligo, Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Donegal, there is no economic recovery. Figures from the Western Development Commission show a small jobs growth of 1.4% in the west compared to 3.9% across the state.

“Many of the jobs being created in the region are part time as evidenced by the fact that the percentage of those in part time work in the west has increased from 18.7% in 2007 to 25.7% in 2014.

“The rate of youth unemployment across the west still remains higher than the national average at 29%, with over 7,000 young people across the west signing as jobseekers. Of these, an average of 40% have been signing for more than one year.

“Despite the clear need for a targeted job creation strategy for the west, successive Governments have failed to ensure adequate investment in our rural communities.

“Since 2009, just 11% of IDA visits were in the west compared to 48% of visits to Dublin in the same period and despite all the pre -election spin from this Government in relation to developing rural communities, over €33 million will be taken out of local western economies as a result of the cuts to the LEADER programme.

“Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have stood over the decimation of rural communities – they have allowed our public services to be dismantled, they have allowed our key industries to falter and they have watched our precious youth emigrate in their thousands.

“Sinn Féin is demanding a fair recovery, north and south, east and west. We will not allow an economic recovery that leaves the west behind.

“Our campaign is about delivering a new deal for the west. It is about delivering hope for our young people and ensuring that our communities thrive into the future.

“I am calling on individuals, community representatives and the public to get behind this campaign and Stand Up for the West.”

Seasfaidh Sinn Féin an fhód ar son an Iarthar – An Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh

Ag labhairt dó roimh sheoladh feachtas a pháirtí “Seas an Fód ar son an Iarthar” ar an Déardaoin beag seo, 28ú Márta, in Óstán an Welcome Inn i gCaisleán a ’Bharraigh, tá iarrtha ag iarrthóir Shinn Féin don Ghaillimh Thiar-Maigh Eo Theas san chéad olltoghchán eile ar ghrúpaí pobail agus daoine aonair tacú leis an bhfeachtas agus beart de réir briathair a lorg d’Iarthar na hÉireann.

Labhróidh an Teachta Dála agus Uachtarán Shinn Féin Gerry Adams ag an ócáid, maraon leis an bhfeisire Eorpach Matt Carthy agus urlabhraí an fheachtais, an Comhairleoir  Rose Conway Walsh as Maigh Eo.

Deir an Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh:

“Is beag téarnamh eacnamaíoch atá le feiceáil ag cuid mhaith daoine sna contaetha thiar ar nós Gaillimh,, Sligeach, Maigh Eo agus Liatroim. Léiríonn figiúir ó Choimisiún Forbartha an Iarthair méadú beag ar fhostaíocht de 1.4% san Iarthar i gcomparáid le 3.9% trasna an Stát.

“Tá cuid mhaith de na postanna atá dhá chruthú sa réigiún páirt-aimseartha, mar a léirítear san ardú sa chéatadán dóibh siúd san Iarthar i bhfostaíocht páirt-aimseartha a bheith ardaithe ó 18.7% i 2007 go 25.7% i 2014.

“Tá an ráta dífhostaíochta i measc an aos-óg san Iarthar fós níos airde ná an meán náisiúnta ag 29%, le h-ós cionn 7,000 duine óg ar fud an Iarthair ar íocaíochtaí cuardaitheora poist. Ar an meán, tá 40% díbh seo ag síniú le h-ós cionn bliana.

“In ainneoin an gá le straitéis sonraithe forbartha fostaíochta don Iarthair, tá teipthe ar Rialtais i ndiaidh a chéile cinntiú go ndéanfaí infheistíocht leordóthain inár pobail tuaithe.

“Ó 2009, ní raibh ach 11% de chuairteanna an Údarás Forbartha Tionscail san Iarthar, i gcomparáid le  48% de chuairteanna i mBaile Átha Cliath sa tréimhse céanna agus in ainneoin neart baothchainte réamhthoghcháin ón Rialtas maidir le pobail tuaithe a fhorbairt, bainfear €33 milliún as an eacnamaíocht logánta san Iarthar de bharr ciorruithe sa gclár LEADER.

“Tá Fine Gael agus Fianna Fáil freagrach as slad a dhéanamh ar phobail tuaithe  - lig siad d’íosghrádú seirbhísí poiblí, scaoil siad spriocthionscail le fána agus ba iad ba chiontsiocair le na mílte dár gcuid ógánaithe a dhul ar imirce.

“Tá Sinn Féin ag iarraidh téarnamh cothrom thoir, thiar, ó dheas agus ó thuaidh. Ní ghlacfaidh muid le téarnamh eacnamaíoch a fhágann an Iarthar in áit na leathphingine.

“Baineann feachtas s’againne le leagan amach níos cothroime ar chúrsaí don Iarthar. Baineann sé le dóchas a thabhairt dár gcuid daoine óga agus cinntiú go mbeidh rath ar phobail sna blianta atá amach romhainn.

“Tá mé ag iarraidh ar dhaoine aonair, ionadaithe pobail agus ar an bpobal thré chéile tacú leis an bhfeachtas seo agus an Fód a Sheasamh ar son an Iarthar.”
