Cullinane welcomes €6M investment in Dunmore East Harbour

27 May, 2015 - by David Cullinane TD

Waterford Sinn Fein Senator David Cullinane has welcomed plans to invest €6M in Dunmore East pier.  He was responding to an announcement from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine that a contract for the dredging project was awarded and that works will commence in early June and be completed in September.

Senator Cullinane said:

“Today’s announcement by Minister Coveney is good news for fishermen, the local community, and the South East region.

“It is vitally important that dredging work in the harbour takes place as soon as possible to maximize its full potential.

“The Fishery Harbour Centre at Dunmore East is an important piece of infrastructure and the bedrock of the local community.

“Right across Ireland coastal communities are struggling to survive so it good to see the government investing in the fishing industry and in coastal livelihoods.

“The South East region has suffered badly over the years from government neglect and lack of investment in jobs and employment creation.

“The development of the pier at Dunmore East is critical to the growth of our fishing industry,   the wider seafood sector and to the tourist industry in the region.

“So while the works will obviously improve the utilization of the infrastructure in Dunmore East, they should also stimulate further economic development in the area with a spin off for local job creation.”
