Emergency departments human rights report 'alarming' - McLaughlin

27 May, 2015 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has said it is alarming that patients in emergency care departments in the North suffered inhuman and degrading treatment.

The chair of the Assembly's health committee said;

"The fact the Human Rights Commission's report found that individual patients in accident and emergency departments experienced inhuman and degrading treatment is alarming.

"While there was no evidence of systemic violations of patients’ human rights, any instance is one too many.

"It is also very worrying the report found that some patients did not get help with pain relief, food or personal care.

"All patients using our accident and emergency departments are entitled to care which respects, protects and fulfils the health service’s human rights obligations.

"It is also important we recognise and respect the human rights of hospital staff, particularly in accident and emergency departments and that their human rights should also be respected.

"It is important we now work with the Commission and with health trusts to ensure the recommendations of this report are implemented.

"We do not want to see a repeat of the unacceptable treatment and care received by some patients."
