Deputy Lord Mayor unveils complete guide to the statues and sculptures of Dublin
Do you know where the statues of the 10 Virgins are located in O’Connell Street? Do you know what piece of music is featured on the statue of Daniel O’Connell? Do you know what statue features a cat as a symbol of freedom?
Yesterday evening in the Mansion House the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Larry O’Toole launched a new book that has theanswers to these questions and many more. The book entitled The Complete Guide to the Statues and Sculptures of Dublin was written by Neal Doherty who as a Failte Ireland qualified tourist guide knows the city intimately. The book contains 249 entries and includes pictures, information on the sculptors, and details for each of the works throughout the city.
Cllr. O’Toole said:
“We are very lucky to have such a wonderful collection of public art here in the city of Dublin with some of the works dating from the 1700’s. We walk by these works every day without giving a second thought as to their meaning, their symbolism or maybe even noticing that they are there! Neal’s book brings the collection to life and helps us discover, decode, deduce the significance of each of the works”.
The launch was attended by many from the Irish tourist trade and the art world. The book will be available in all good bookshops for the price of €15.
