Contribution of the elderly should be recognised – McCann
Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann has called for older people to be recognised for the positive contribution they make to society.
Speaking at the Pensioners Parliament in Belfast this morning she said:
"All too often we hear the good news story of people living longer being portrayed in a negative way relating to the ‘costs of an ageing society’.
“A recent report on Health and Social Care once again raised the serious concerns many of our older population have around access, waiting times and services.
“Everyone no matter what their age is entitled to services being delivered in a respectful and dignified manner.
“The enormous contribution that older people make to society can sometimes be forgotten.
“This greatly outweighs the costs of providing some older people with the health and social services that everyone is entitled to."
