High Court ruling on privilege ‘only a prelude’ – McDonald
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has welcomed the High Court ruling that Dáil comments can be published by the media. She has called for the immediate establishment of a transparent and credible investigation into Siteserv and other IBRC transactions.
Deputy McDonald said:
“I welcome the decision by Mr. Justice Binchy that Denis O’Brien’s injunction cannot prevent the publishing of Dáil comments by the media. The primacy of parliamentary privilege has been reasserted, that is a good thing. It is not lost on citizens that neither the Taoiseach nor the Tánaiste were prepared to defend this fundamental cornerstone of democracy.
“Now that the legal controversy – and potential constitutional crisis – has given way to clarity, it is time to establish a fully independent, transparent, and credible investigation into the Siteserv deal and other IBRC transactions.
“Deputy Catherine Murphy did not make her comments for the sake of generating headlines; she presented information to the Dáil in good faith and with the express objective of forcing government to abandon the ‘insider’ KPMG review in favour of a robust, independent investigation. That is the correct approach for government to take. That is what should have happened at the outset and must happen now”
