Ó Muilleoir calls on PSNI Chief Constable to clarify comments
South Belfast MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has called on PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton to clarify the comments he made during an interview recorded for last week’s Panorama programme on state collusion with loyalist murder gangs.
"Last night I met with relatives of those killed by a loyalist murder gang at Sean Grahams’ bookmakers on the Ormeau Road in February 1992.
"The sense of hurt and anger still felt among these families is as palpable today given the shocking revelations contained in last week’s Panorama programme.
"While the families search for truth will and must go on, one particular issue raised with me were these comments made by George Hamilton in the course of his interview when he questioned the scale of collusion.
"As evidence of collusion between the state and loyalist murders gangs gathers by the day. The Chief Constable needs to accept the full extent of that collusion.
"When relatives such as those of the Sean Graham’s massacre continue to uncover revelation after revelation of collusion, George Hamilton’s comments not only leave him exposed but also undermine confidence in current policing arrangements.
"Many who have put their trust in the PSNI will be bewildered why the present Chief Constable would allow himself to be tarnished with actions that predate his tenure.
"I would call on the Chief Constable to clarify his comments and to reassure these families that he will do all in his power to ensure that under his leadership the PSNI will cooperate wholeheartedly with any current or future investigation relating to the massacre at Sean Graham’s."
