Anderson backs Thalidomide compensation campaign in Brussels

2 June, 2015 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has backed a European campaign for compensation for victims and survivors of Thalidomide.

Ms Anderson said;

"For decades, victims and survivors of Thalidomide have been courageously campaigning for justice for the terrible wrong that was done to them.

"They have challenged the drug company and now victims and survivors from across Europe are taking on the German government for its promotion of Thalidomide, which was widely marketed throughout Europe by German pharmaceutical company, Grunenthal.

"The federal German government actively lobbied to prematurely end the negligence trial of Grunenthal in 1970.

"As the victims and survivors from across Europe brought their campaign to Brussels, I was honoured to meet Jacqueline Fleming, herself a survivor.

"Her courage and dedication are an inspiration to everyone who campaigns for justice.

"Jacqueline and other victims and survivors are entitled to and deserve justice and compensation. Many of the victims are now getting older and are in poor health; they cannot afford to wait any longer for justice."
