Ferris welcomes regional agreement to end fish discards

4 June, 2015 - by Martin Ferris TD

Sinn Féin Agriculture and Fisheries Spokesperson Martin Ferris TD welcomed the announcement of a regional agreement to end the practise of fish discards.

Deputy Ferris said:

“The dumping of millions of tonnes of perfectly good fish into the sea should have ended long ago. It was both a waste and an immoral practice which Sinn Féin has opposed for many years.

“The practice did nothing to protect fish stocks and this development is to be welcomed.

“I note that the ban on discarding will apply to the prawn fishery in all waters, the whiting fishery in the Celtic Sea, and the haddock fishery in the Irish Sea and in the North West area from 1 January 2016 and that this will be extended to all stocks and to all fisheries by 2019.

“The policing of these measures will have to be thorough and equitable and I look forward to hearing from the minister how it will be achieved. He should now consult with the industry to discuss how these measures will be policed and implemented.”
