John Delaney should appear before Oireachtas Committee - Dessie Ellis TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Sports Dessie Ellis TD has called for the Oireachtas Committee on Sports to request the attendance of FAI Chairman John Delaney in order to further explain a 5 million euro payment the FAI received from FIFA in the wake of the Thierry Henri handball controversy in 2010.
Deputy Ellis said:
"Mr Delaney has claimed the payment was part of an agreement to end any legal proceedings against FIFA for allowing the French victory to stand in light of clear evidence that the winning goal was scored due to a handball not being noticed by officials.
“It is hard to know how seriously FIFA would have taken any threat of legal action and so this payment is seen by some to be possibly part of the suspected corruption in the international football organisation which is currently being investigated by the FBI.
“It is in the best interests of the FAI and football as a whole that the Oireachtas Committee and Mr Delaney can meet for a frank discussion on this payment rather than allow rhumors and doubt to grow over the actions of our national football association on the international stage."
