Official opening of Fishing Agency first step in decentralisation
Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Oliver McMullan has welcomed the official opening of the Fisheries Agency in Downpatrick.
Mr McMullan said,
“Today is a landmark day for the Department of Agriculture with the official opening of the Fisheries Agency in Downpatrick.
“This is the first stage of the total decentralisation of the DARD department from Belfast into other areas across the North.
“With the Fisheries Agency going to Downpatrick, the Forestry Agency going to Fermanagh and the main department moving to Ballykelly we are beginning to see decentralisation in action.
“I would like to congratulate the Minister Michelle O’Neill in choosing appropriate areas for her decentralisation process.
“Moving the Fisheries Agency close to the majority of the fishing fleet, the Forestry Agency into the West and her main department into a rural area will prove beneficial for both the staff and workers in these industries.
“I now hope that the decentralisation process will help stimulate the local economy with a knock-on effect in the local retail and food sector.”
