Draconian Cuts to one parent family payment need to be reversed immediately - Cllr Janice Boylan

9 June, 2015 - by Janice Boylan

Dublin City Cllr Janice Boylan has called on Minister Joan Burton to reverse the planned cuts to the one parent family allowance.

Speaking after last night's Dublin City Council meeting, Cllr Boylan said:

"These cuts will see for example a parent with one child working for 20 hours a week on minimum wage lose 108 euro per week. If these cuts go ahead we will see already struggling one parent families plunge deeper into poverty and deprivation.

"I do not need to remind Labour Minister Joan Burton of her promise to not implement these cuts until a childcare system was in place. Her idea of a Scandinavian childcare system that she promises hasn't materialised so why should she go ahead with these drastic cuts to these vulnerable families?

"I am calling on The Minister for Social Protection to leave these vulnerable families alone and reverse her austerity policies of cutting one parent family payment. These cuts can be stopped and should be stopped as a matter of urgency."
