Murphy calls for broad-based opposition to Tory austerity agenda
Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has called for broad-based opposition to the austerity agenda of the British government.
Speaking after a series of engagements in London today, Mr Murphy said;
"I was in London today with party colleagues Pat Doherty MP and Paul Maskey MP for a series of engagements with a number of groups, including the leader of the SNP group at Westminster Angus Robertson, to discuss the need for a broad-based opposition to the austerity agenda of the British government.
"The financial crisis currently facing the Executive is a result of cuts by the Tory government to the block grant and further threats to public services and the welfare state.
"If the British government is serious about making a positive contribution then those threats should be lifted.
"There is a need for a wide range of groups from across society, including trade unions, churches, political parties and others to stand together to oppose this austerity agenda which seeks to slash public services and punish the most vulnerable in society."
