Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the government to provide immediate access to records and archives held by Galway County Council on Mother and Baby Homes

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“We now know from recent media reports that the government was aware of a 2012 HSE Report into Mother and Baby Homes.

“The report was prepared as part of the HSE’s examination of interventions by Irish State health authorities in the Magdalene laundries and was based on an examination of records, which were handed over to the HSE in 2011.

“I would like to know when the Minister for Children was made aware of the 2012 report and why there was a two year delay in setting up the Commission of Inquiry.

“It is not acceptable for Ministers, Government Departments, and Councils to withhold records and archival material relating to Mother and Baby Homes.

“All records and information relating to these institutions should be in the public domain and available to researchers, activists and the general public.

“There is the bizarre situation in Tuam where Catherine Corless who has worked tirelessly on the issue has been repeatedly denied access by Galway County Council to records relating to the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

“I am calling on the Minster to ensure these records are immediately made available to Ms. Corless without further delay.”

Caithfear na taifid maidir le Teach Máthair & Leanaí Thuama a chuir ar fáil  – An Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

Tá iarrtha ag Seanadóir Shinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh ar an rialtas deimhniú go gcuirfear comhaid agus ábhar chartlainne faoi na Tithe Máthair & Linbh atá i seilbh Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe ar fáil láithreach.

Deir an Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh:

“Tá fhios againn ó thuairiscí sna meáin le déanaí go raibh eolas i 2012 ag an rialtas ar thuairisc de chuid an Fheidhmeannacht Sláinte faoi na Tithe Máthair & Linbh.

“Cuireadh an tuairisc seo le chéile mar chuid den scrúdú ar idirghabhálacha ó údaráis sláinte de chuid Stát na hÉireann faoi na Níochanlanna Maighdiléine a bhí bunaithe ar scrúdú ar chomhaid, a tugadh ar lámh don FSS i 2011.

“Ba mhaith liom fáíl amach cén uair ar cuireadh an tAire Leanaí ar an eolas faoi thuairisc 2012 agus cén fáth an raibh moill dhá bhliain ar bhunú an Choimisiún Fiosrúcháin?

“Níl sé sách maith go mbeadh Airí, Ranna Rialtais, nó Údaráis Áitiúla ag cur bacanna ar scrúdaithe ar thaifid agus ábhar chartlainne eile a bhaineann leis na tithe Máthair & Leanaí.

“Ba chóir rochtain poibli a chinntiú ar na taifid agus eolas a bhaineann leis na h-institiúid seo agus é a bheith ar fáíl do lucht taighde, gníomhaithe agus an phobal níos leithne.

“Tá sé dochreidte go bhfuiltear ag cur bac, i gcomhthéacs taighde faoi chás Thuama, ar Catherine Corless a d'oibrigh go dian leis an gceist seo a thabhairt chun solais ar an gcéad dul síos agus a bhfuil cosc curtha uirthi arís agus arís eile ag Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe maidir le taifid a bhaineann le Teach Máthair agus Linbh Thuama.

“Tá mé ag iarraidh ar an Aire cinntiú go gcuirtear na comhaid seo ar fáil do Catherine Corless gan a thuilleadh moille.”
