Scrap the meters and replace the lead pipes instead – Ó Clochartaigh

Sinn Féin Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh is calling on the Minister for the Environment, Alan Kelly to instruct Irish Water to scrap the metering campaign and use the resources to replace lead pipes.

Speaking today the Galway West/South Mayo Senator says:

‘The money being wasted by Irish Water would be much better employed in replacing lethal lead piping. If the government are serious about their concerns for people’s health this is what they should be doing.

'There should be an audit in all local authorities to ascertain how many houses have these pipes. The planning offices should have a good idea and these should be replaced as a matter of urgency.

‘It is estimated that Galway City alone has around three thousand houses in this situation. These figures need to be clarified across the country and you don’t need water meters to do that.

‘Even if we agreed with the government on the need for domestic metering, which Sinn Féin doesn’t, the government by their own admission does not need to meter water supplies for a number of years as they are charging flat rates to householders. The supply of proper, consumable water should be the number one priority.

‘Minister Kelly needs to provide for every family that needs to replace these pipes. Many people simply cannot afford to do it themselves as they are under so much pressure already trying to make ends meet – and in many cases they were not even aware these pipes were in use in their homes.

‘It’s time for the Minister to scrap the meters and get the lead out!’

Déan dearmad ar na méadair agus athraigh na píopaí luaidhe ina áit – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh ag impí ar an Aire Comhshaoil Alan Kelly treoir a thabhairt do Uisce Éireann deireadh a chuir leis na méadair uisce agus na h-acmhainní a úsáid ina ionad sin le píopaí luaidhe a athrú.

Ag labhairt do inniu deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar/Maigh Eo Theas:

‘D’fhéadfaí an t-airgead atá dhá chuir amú ag Uisce Éireann a úsáid i bhfad níos fearr chun na píopaí marfacha luaidhe a thógáil amach. Má tá an Rialtas i ndáiríre faoin imní atá orthu maidir le sláinte daoine sin an rud is cóir dóibh a bheith ag déanamh.

‘Ba chóir iniúchadh a dhéanamh sna h-údaráis áitiúla ar fad le fáil amach cé mhéad teach a bhfuil na píopaí seo iontu. Ba chóir go mbeadh tuairim mhaith ag na h-oifigí pleanála agus ba chóir na píopaí a athrú mar ábhar práinne.

‘Meastar go bhfuil suas le trí mhíle teach i gCathair na Gaillimhe amháin atá sa staid seo. Ní mhór na figiúir seo a dheimhniú trasna na tire agus ní theastaíonn méadair chuige sin.

‘Fiú dá n-aontódh Sinn Féin le polasaí méadair tí an Rialtais, agus ní aontaionn, admhaíonn an Rialtas iad féin nach gá méadair a bheith ar thithe go ceann roinnt blianta mar go mbeidh billí caighdeánacha dhá chuir amach chuig daoine. Ba chóir go mbeadh soláthar uisce glan, inólta mar an phríomh sprioc acu ag an bpointe seo.

‘Caithfidh an tAire Kelly tacú le chuile theaghlach gur gá dóibh na píopaí seo a athrú. Tá an t-uafás daoine nach bhfuil in acmhainn seo a dhéanamh iad féin de bharr go bhfuil an oiread brú orthu cheana féin ó thaobh costais maireachtála di – agus i bhformhór na gcásanna ní raibh siad fiú ar an eolas go bhfuil na píopaí seo ina dtithe acu.

‘Tá sé in am ag an Aire deireadh a chuir leis na méadair agus an luaidhe a bhaint amach!’.
