All-Ireland approach to dealing with addiction needed - McLaughlin
Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has said an all-Ireland approach to dealing with addiction is needed in the north west.
Speaking after visiting the Whiteoaks facility, Ms McLaughlin said;
"I welcome the announcement that Whiteoaks is to receive additional funding from the Dublin government for its addiction treatment facilities.
"I visited the facility to meet with Aodhan Ó Riordain, Minister of State with special responsibility for a drugs strategy, to discuss the importance of tackling alcohol and substance addiction in the wider north west region.
"Given the ongoing debate on the need for addiction treatment facilities in the north west, it is unacceptable that there is a purpose-built facility so close to Derry which is not fully operational at present.
"Addiction issues to not recognise borders and neither should treatment services. This centre should be funded on a cross-border basis and be available for people from Derry, Donegal and across the wider north west.
"Substance misuse is a serious problem in the north west and we must ensure that every avenue is explored to deliver the best possible service for those in need."
