Clerys liquidation a real blow to 130 workers – Mary Lou McDonald TD

12 June, 2015 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Central, Mary Lou McDonald, responded to news this evening that the Clerys department store has gone into liquidation.

Deputy McDonald said:

“I am shocked and disappointed to hear that Clerys will not be opening its doors tomorrow. Though no one would like to see the possible loss of the store itself, which is an iconic Dublin feature, what really concerns me is the 130 employees who have lost their jobs.

“These employees were given absolutely no notice that they would no longer have their jobs. Some of these people have worked in the store all their lives. It has been known for some time that the store was in difficulty. The disregard for workers rights is appalling.

“Siptu is currently in talks with the new owners. My thoughts are with the Clerys workers who find themselves in this awful position. Whatever the outcome of the discussions, the rights and entitlements of these workers must be absolutely protected.”
