British government must address its human rights failures - Anderson

15 June, 2015 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the British government has a responsibility to address its failure to comply with human rights legislation in cases of collusion.

Ms Anderson said;

"It is rich of David Cameron to wax lyrical about human rights to mark the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta given his own government's track record on human rights.

"His government has already announced its intention to scrap the Human Rights Act and to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights.

"And Britain's record of human rights abuses in Ireland is becoming increasingly clear to everyone through the involvement of its state forces and agents in collusion with loyalist death squads to murder hundreds of people.

"The British government cannot hide from its human rights responsibilities over the legacy of the conflict in the North, particularly its Article 2 right to life obligations in cases of collusion and its shoot-to-kill policy.

"If David Cameron is serious about the promotion and protection of human rights then the British government must demonstrate that commitment by coming clean on its human rights abuses and resourcing investigations into collusion."
