Government contradicting itself on post office issue – Colreavy
Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, has said that government lacks consistency on protecting the post office network.
Deputy Colreavy said:
“I welcome the publication of a report by the working group seeking to promote and develop business in the post office network.
“The report outlines some positive suggestions that can be introduced to help solidify the network throughout the country.
“The Post Office Network Business Development Group was established to provide a report to stimulate the post office network and to bring it new business.
“At the same time, the Department of Social Protection has been issuing new forms to people in receipt of payments from that Department telling them the Department would prefer them not to use to post office if possible when receiving payments.
“There seems to be a contradiction in policy between the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, and the Department of Social Protection.
“One seems to be keen to develop the network while the other is on a path to destroying it.
“Payments from the Department make up approximately 29% of post office business.
“The government appears to be speaking out of the both sides of its mouth on this issue.
“It is essential that there is a commitment to the retention of payments from the Department of Social Protection in the post office network.”
