Dublin Bay UNESCO reserve status welcome- Councillor Denise Mitchell

23 June, 2015 - by Denise Mitchell

Dublin City Councillor Denise Mitchell and General election candidate for Dublin Bay North has welcomed the news that an enlarged area of Dublin Bay has been given Biosphere status.

She said,

“This announcement is a huge opportunity to develop Dublin Bay into a world class destination for environmental and wildlife amenities.

"Dublin Bay is an area of supreme natural beauty with many different forms of wildlife including many protected species like Brent Goose and Harbour Porpoise.

"We have a wealth of beautiful coastline particularly in Howth and Dollymount where many Dubliners and Tourists come to experience the abundance of outdoor activities we have on offer.”

Councillor Mitchell further added,

“The government’s track record on protecting its environment has often been left wanting and they now need to follow up with real action.

"Bull Island is unfortunately suffering a decrease in population of many of its wildlife inhabitants.

"This cannot be allowed to continue and every effort must now be made with our new UNESCO status to reverse that trend”
