McMullan welcomes Minister's positive remarks on BVD
Sinn Féin's Assembly Agriculture spokesperson, Oliver McMullan MLA has welcomed Minister Michelle O'Neill's indication that she intends to legislate for compulsory testing of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) later this year.
Speaking after Minister O'Neill briefed the Assembly agricultural committee on a range of issues, Mr McMullan said,
“Production diseases such as BVD tend to have a significant impact on productivity so there is strong interest from the farming industry for compulsory testing to be introduced.
"I welcome the Minster's positive remarks on introducing compulsory BVD testing.
“I note that Minister O'Neill has been prioritising this issue now for many months by ensuring the support from the diary and beef industry as well as ensuring the scheme can be administered effectively.
“I now look forward for further indication in the months ahead that the necessary actions are in place.
“As part of a BVD eradication programme, farmers look forward to controlling the disease, which has a negative impact on animal productivity.
