Anderson encourages people to attend TTIP protest
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has encouraged people to attend tomorrow's protests against a controversial piece of legislation, which would allow international business interests to overrule democratic institutions.
Ms Anderson said;
"The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTTIP) is one of the largest and most controversial pieces of legislation to come through the European Parliament and its implications could be very far-reaching.
"This proposed legislation would allow major international companies to ride roughshod over the democratic decisions of EU member states.
"If passed, it would weaken democracy through the Investor State Dispute Settlement clause which would allow corporations to sue states for loss of revenue if they do not agree with their legislation.
"It would also threaten workers rights, agriculture, food safety, the environment and potentially people's health.
"Sinn Féin MEPs have been to the fore of the campaign against TTIP at the European Parliament and elsewhere. I am calling on as many people as possible to come out and take part in Saturday's protest against this draconian legislation.
"The protest will take place outside the EU Commission office on the Dublin Road, Belfast at 11am on Saturday."
